Robbie Walden Band, Country Lips, and Son of the Velvet Rat

Robbie Walden Band - Born in Anchorage, Alaska and raised in Sequim, Washington, Walden was adopted at age 13 by his best friend’s family after enduring the abuse of an alcoholic father. The love shown by this family, along with encouragement given by his grandfather who introduced him to music and his coaches who introduced him to wrestling and weightlifting, sparked a fire in Walden to stay focused and driven in all he does. “If it wasn’t for my best friend’s family and my coaches who believed in me at a young age, I’d probably be in jail or dead,” he says.

Walden went on to excel in sports, competing in Strongman and Olympic weightlifting, setting both national and world records. He also proudly served his country for four years in the United States Army until he was injured in combat in Iraq and was medically discharged. Following his service, Walden returned to professional sports with his brothers Bristol and Jesse, while on the side developing his songwriting craft and performing acoustically at local venues. His music came to the forefront of his life as the result of the devastating loss of his brother Jesse, who died of a massive heart attack during a strength training session. “After that I no longer wanted to train anymore,” says Walden. Instead, he immersed himself in his music, one of the few things he found comfort in during his time of grief.

Walden admits to wearing his heart on his sleeve, and does so especially through his lyrics which capture the highs and lows of his life along with his personal beliefs and morals.

Country Lips - The band will send you home in a sweaty, boozy haze, feeling like you’ve had a great night out, whether nursing a heartbreak or a heart aflame…. Pucker up.

Happy to embrace the genre’s ramshackle side, Country Lips provide a welcome antidote to the increasingly polished nature of country pop. This is music to drink and dance to and a fine companion with which to welcome in 2017.

Verdict: A party from start to finish. (4 / 5)

These boys look like outlaws. If they entered your bar, silence would soon fall as heads turn to eyeball this ensemble. But after a few tunes they’d be everyone’s friends because so much of their repertoire is good time stuff. They don’t cry into their beer.
—Lyndon Bolton, No Depression, January 2017

Son of the Velvet Rat - SON OF THE VELVET RAT is the family business of Georg Altziebler and Heike Binder, a husband-and-wife team of exceptional height who left their home town of Graz, Austria and the cloistered safety of the Continent for the endless highway of America, finally settling in Joshua Tree in California’s Mojave Desert in 2013. Situated at the vanguard of Euro-Americana, their songs build on the cabaret traditions of Old World masters like Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel and Fabrizio De Andre, now fused with the dark Old Testament prophecy and Kabbalistic visions conjured by Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen and especially Bob Dylan.
