Summer’s slowly on its way out, no matter how long we try to extend it. But all that means is the next best season is on its way with more rad shows to look forward to! Check out our playlist and see if there’s anything that stands out to you, and read up on a few of our favorites coming up!
Steeped in the tradition of thoughtful, idiosyncratic singer-songwriters like John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, and Van Morrison, Andrew Duhon crafts little worlds in his songs – vivid snapshots of lonely ramblers, given life by honeyed melodies and his own mellifluous voice. Though it draws on sounds that will be familiar to anyone who's listened to country, folk, or blues in the last 50 years, Duhon's music still possesses a vitality and a way of building up big swells of emotion. While Duhon has spent the majority of his career as a solo artist, he recently formed a trio, with bass and drums lending a new fullness and warmth to his songs. His somehow expansive yet intimate songs should radiate beautifully in the walls of Fawcett Hall.
We'd be hard-pressed to think of any more joyous bands around than SISTERS. The lovable two-piece from Seattle has been close to Alma Mater's heart since the very beginning, having performed during our opening weekend celebration, and we couldn't be happier to have the back. Made up of Emily Westman and Andrew Vait, SISTERS create ebullient electro-pop that's dominated by heavy-duty hooks. Mixing '80s DayGlo pop, sprightly indie rock, and four-on-the-floor grooves, the music of SISTERS is much richer and more complex than you would ever expect from a duo. When they take to the stage, there's no denying the level of giddy exuberance they bring, taking the crowd along with them. SISTERS will be joined by local favorites A Leaf and Bunny N Bear, bring with them some pastoral psych-rock and R&B-tinged indie pop, respectively.
Gritty City Sirens' varieTEASE
For nearly ten years, the Gritty City Sirens have been helping to inject a little more fun and sexiness into Tacoma's nightlife. Proudly the City of Destiny's preeminent burlesque troupe, the Gritty City Sirens allow themselves to get wonderfully creative with their vaudevillian shows, with big doses of humor and artistic energy separating their performances from your standard striptease. Their new show, VarieTEASE, promises to bring more of the vivaciously risque entertainment that has garnered them such a devoted following. Perhaps most exciting of all, though, is that Seattle legend and Burlesque Hall of Famer Velvet Ice will be gracing the stage. If you've never had the opportunity to be delighted by a live burlesque revue, the Gritty City Sirens' VarieTEASE should be an eye-opening experience.
